AFAA Convention 2024 – SouthEastern Splendour

The Victorian Floral Art Association and the Floral Art Guild of ACT are delighted to invite you to the AFAA Convention 2024 – Southeastern Splendour – being co-hosted by both organisations at the Ainslie Football Club, 52 Wakefield Avenue, Ainslie, Canberra.

 

Floriade will be in full swing during the Convention, so you will be able to immerse yourself in a world of flowers and floral art whilst you are visiting Canberra.

Tuesday 24 September

4.00pm – 7.00pm  Competition Staging Classes 1-8 / State & Honorary Exhibit Staging

7.00pm – 9.00pm AFAA General Meeting

Wednesday 25 September 

8.00am – 12 noon Competition Staging Classes 1-8

10.00am – 11.30am Competition Staging Classes 9 & 10 (Imposes)

12 noon – 1.00pm Judges Lunch and Briefing

1.00pm – 5.00pm Competition Judging

6.45pm for 7.00pm Feature demonstration with Myhanh Rutledge / Presentation of Special Awards

Thursday 26 September

9.00am – 11.30am Workshop 1 with Myhanh Rutledge

Fractured Screen – Participants will construct interchangeable screens fixed on a wooden base with flowers and other horticultural material weaved throughout. The focus design principle is rhythm.

12.30pm – 5.00pm Tulip Tops Excursion

6.30pm –  Convention Dinner

Friday 27 September

9.00am – 11.30am Workshop 2 with Myhanh Rutledge

Kokodama With A Twist – Participants will create a vertical parallel arrangement radiating from a flax sphere. Focus design elements are line and form.

12.30pm – 5.00pm Galloping Canberra Gourmet Excursion

12 noon – 6.00pm Competition Take Down

Class 1 Splendiferous (Championship)

Staged on supplied black floor disc 100cm diameter. Height unlimited. Fresh materials to predominate. To be viewed and judged all around. Pre constructed work no more than 40% of design.

Mixed media wallhanging; Refer below for definition Dimensions 75cm height 50cm width

Definitions to be used in judging Wall hangings: (page 102 2nd Edition AFAA Manual) are designs that hang against a vertical surface, using any combination of fresh, treated and/or dried plant material. Mixed Media: An Art form which may combine and integrate any variety of materials e.g. paints of all descriptions, Plaster of Paris, fabrics, wood, wool & yarns, “found” objects like plastic and steel, into a floral art design. The Elements and Principles of Design will always apply. Fresh material to predominate.
